November 9, 2010: "Combining Academic Studies with IT Certifications"
Speaker: Louis D'Alessandro (George Mason University)

Abstract: Because of unprecedented growth in the IT industry, especially in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, it has become more apparent that students graduating with a BS degree in Information Technology and/or Computer Science can enhance their technology acumen with practical hands on IT technology experience with industry certifications.  In December 2008 Howard University joined the Cisco educational environment as a Local Academy with support from the George Mason University Regional Academy.  Professors at Howard are in the process of becoming Academy Instructors.  The presentation will focus on how to become a Cisco Regional Academy and how the features and benefits of participation in the program will enhance University level real world curriculum.  All universities are welcome to join with a few already involved. Community Colleges in the Washington Metropolitan area already offer the Academy curriculum and have been doing so for several years.

Mr. D'Alessandro is a professional telecommunications executive with over forty years of engineering, operations, planning, financial management, and computer services experience in leading and advising organizations providing telecommunications services. Mr. D'Alessandro had a 34-year career at AT&T in the engineering, operations, and marketing departments. Most recently he served as Vice President at SAIC as Task Leader of the STARS-SMI INS Data Communications Support Group in Washington, DC.  Currently, Mr. D’Alessandro is a Professor at George Mason University at the College of Information Technology and Engineering. In this position he is responsible for the University’s role as the Regional Cisco Academy for 15 Local Academies currently providing CCNA certification training at high schools and junior colleges.

Prof. D'Alessandro shares his experience and vision with audience.

October 26, 2010 "Distributed Labs: Hands-On Experience in Lecture-Based Courses"
Speaker: Dr. Bonnie H. Ferri (Georgia Tech)
Link to the TESSAL web site: http://www.ece.gatech.edu/research/tessal/index.html
Abstract: Hands-on experiments can be very valuable to a learning experience, but they are typically relegated to centralized laboratories associated with lab courses. This talk will describe a program at Georgia Tech, entitled TESSAL, that develops portable labs and introduces them into a variety of ECE courses that currently do not have lab components. Many of the labs are designed to be done during a standard lecture class while students are at their desks; others are structured for students to do at home. The program establishes a template for the lab modules, develops logistical support, and determines best practices for establishing this type of program.

Bonnie H. Ferri received the B.S degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, the M.S. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. She has been on the faculty of Georgia Tech since 1988, where she is currently a Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Affairs.Dr. Ferri’s research concentrates on embedded control systems, industrial control, and controls education. She has co-authored a junior-level textbook and has written a number of papers on controls education.  She has won several national awards including the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award and the 2004 Best Paper Award from the IEEE Control Systems Magazine, and the Hewlett-Packard/Harriet B. Rigas Award from the IEEE Education Society.
